Set in the immediate future, Community 92 is a speculative novel fueled by a mother struggling to protect her children as war descends upon the nation. Christina Parker-Guerrero is driving to the mountains in Northern California with her two young children and teen stepdaughter when the city behind her erupts in a series of fiery blasts. The four of them are forced to abandon their minivan on a forest road and fight for their safety. Christina’s husband Mark is in the thick of disaster down in the city. His story intertwines with Christina’s as he suffers injury trying to connect with her while fulfilling his responsibilities to the U.S. Army. While Mark works to survive, Christina and their family face illness, hunger, and an unexpected delivery. Community 92 is a novel of hope in a time of despair; of survival in time of uncertainty. Pro:
Plausible. Unlikely, but could happen.
Excellent story arc.
Reliable character development.

Con:
Chatty. Stilted. Verbose. Wordy. Awkward. Excessive telling. The story got in the way of the plot.

The author has potential. I would enjoy watching her craft mature.

Although... yes, I understand the setting is fruit-cake California, the characters are goofball Californians, but com'n! Nobody carries a firearm? Nobody preps except the government agents? That part wouldn't fly anyplace else in the known universe. Visit the poorest part of the remotest jungle, and you'll find AK47s and machetes. California? Land of Hope-slash-Change? Defenseless?

Walk along any river path in fUSA to see thousands of squatters, their camps rotting in sewage and needles. They know their turf, they are organized, they will use their weapons. I cringed at soldier Mark, wearing his khaki Dockers and chartreuse Polo shirt, pedaling merrily through the American River Parkway... and only getting robbed once, but nobody offering to rape his Caucasian heinie. Nice job if you can get it!

The author gives the impression she possesses zero knowledge of human nature, the looters, the slavers, the cannibals. The craving for power of the government agents.

The author gives the impression she wishes upon a star for a nice safe utopia with unicorns and fairy god-mothers.

This is 2018. This collapse isn't like that. Next year, worse. Spiraling into unrecognizable oblivion. Peak oil, peak water, peak food, peak medical. Peak civilization.

None of it is caused by collusion between foreign government agents.

But that is a different book.

The conclusion gave me cascading chuckles:
So... the ladies want to form a government school. To pump pliable young minds all about civics and regurgitating unthinking factoids. Folks, where did this collapse start?

Community 92 Catherine Hunn 9781520864891 Books Reviews

I was super excited to read this book. I enjoyed the backdrop of the book in Sacramento and the nearby foothills, the story behind, and how it was told primarily through a mothers eyes.
A few glitches such as the author referring to a character who she said is in the Navy a as a Sgt. T h e Navy does not have sergeants. The Army , Air Force, and the Marine Corps have sergeants. A few missed words here and there. Story pretty good story otherwise. Do some research about the military Miss Catherine if you are going to use military topics. You make yourself look foolish otherwise.
Loved it! I had a great time reading this - I especially like the quirky mom main character. I feel like we could be friends. ..
Great story and characters! It kept my interest the whole way.
Disturbingly believable. I had to keep looking outside to make sure I was here, not in the story! Keep writing!
I found it really entertaining. It freaked me out a bit thinking that something like this could really happen. I liked that it took place in my locale, in places I am familiar with. The characters were very relatable. I wish it came to more of a conclusion, but that would probably make it less plausible.
Community 92 tells the story of a family stranded in their home after the US is invaded by another country. They have to learn to survive with no electricity, cell phone service, access to stores, or ability to drive, etc. It was fun reading about how the characters in this book learned to farm, hunt and fish so they wouldn't starve to death. The story was told well and I enjoyed the characters. If you like dystopian books, then this will be perfect for you.
